Back in 1792, Southport was known by its founding name, the Town of Smithville. Although the independent United States of America was less than 20 years old at the time, the Town of Smithville celebrated the nation’s independence by toasting drinks and watching anchored ships fire cannons in the harbor. Today, 21st century patriots still celebrate at the same harbor where a floating barge launches fireworks instead of canon balls. Southport’s Festival Fireworks are a must-see.
